I Love Hate Russell Brand
I’m just starting to enter the world of Russell Brand and I’m not sure what I think. He repels me with his foofie, curly locks poofed in the back, unbuttoned shirt, stubbly perfect jaw line, un-British-like perfect teeth, and lithe little body. But, attracts me with his razor sharp wit and aggressive smiles.
No one has accused me of being on the bleeding edge of pop culture, so it won’t surprise you to know, just last week I watched Forgetting Sarah Marshall for the first time, and, I liked it a lot. This was my first extended taste of Mr. Brand, as his character, singer Aldous Snow, humped and writhed in the bed with Kristin Bell, and while crooning his latest hit, “We’ve Got To Do Something.” Good stuff, he played the oversexed, shallow-spiritual, fairy pop boy toy to perfection. Almost too well, if you know what I mean. Like it wasn’t totally an act. Or he wasn’t going too far method, more like making slight adjustments, like starting his bump and grind two inches lower in the movie than he would normally do in real life.
So, after watching the movie, and the 6.75 hours of outtakes, bloopers, and extras, I decided I probably needed to learn more about this British gent, and I hit the YouTube. It did not disappoint. This is a complicated man.
Here he is doing standup in the round, making people in his own country laugh, and I’m certain he was funny, though I couldn’t really understand a word he said.
Here he is trading wit with Jimmy Kimmel. Wow he’s intelligent. Quick on his feet. Sexually charged. All while promoting a stupid Disney movie starring Adam Sandler.
Here he is arm and arm with the love of his life…a very hot, pale-skinned Katy Perry. He swoops in on the red carpet and charms the interviewer with whacky wit. Perry stands in awe and stammers. She’ll marry him soon.
Here Russell is teetering on the edge of patronizing David Hasselhoff as he interviews him for his telly show, but never crosses the line. He gets the Hoff to share and laugh and the audience eats it up, irony, sincerity, humanity, and all.
Here Brand and Milla Jovovich trade sparks in a sassy love fest disguised as an interview.
And here on Sesame Street. Here kissing Fabrice Fabrice. Here carrying the send up band Infant Sorrow to new heights. Here on Letterman. Here on The View, making all of the ladies blush below the collar. And, here, discussing his sexuality with David Letterman.
He’s clean from drugs and drink. But, he’s spinning off a half-cocked crazy vibe 24/7.
He’s everywhere. He’s taking the US by storm, and I’m afraid I’m hooked.
Bring on Get Him to the Greek and the re-make of Arthur too, this guy has got “it,” and I’ll be watching it. A couple months later than everybody else, but eyes glued to the screen nonetheless.
