It has happened to all of us, the family is together, little Johnny starts the decorative arch enthusiasm and paper, screams of joy to the toy, and immediately rushes to the present day is coming. Poor Aunt Betty, she does not receive a thank you, a hug, or any other recognition of their generosity. Mom and Dad are ashamed and a little frustrated with Johnny, however, is oblivious to everything!
Parents want their children to remember to say "please" or "thank you" and many times when a child forgets to use their manners, parents give a sharp look or a quick, "What?" These types of reminders can be embarrassing for the child. A simple, fun and effective way to teach and reinforce good manners, not just for the holidays, but for the day's activities to day is to teach children American Sign Language signs customs.
Psychologist Sonja Benson, Ph.D., PLLC, says, "When manners children learn and helps children to interact socially in a way that will increase the likelihood of positive interactions and better relationships. Who does like a person who says please and thank you? "
Teaching some basic ASL signs is not only fun, but can have a lasting positive effect in children. Some signs of great way to teach your children are please, thank you and nothing.
Here are some tips to make the signing of success:
• When your child brings a toy or help in some way, for example, and signing "thank you."
• When your child asks for a snack, drink, or a toy, showing the sign "please" and remind them that it is important to say (or sign) please when asking for something.
• Talk about vacation and practice what signs / your child's manners can be used after opening a gift.
• Provide a variety of opportunities to model signals and practice. Dr. Benson adds: "Adults have to do their part to help these ways become a habit to notice when used and comment along the lines of "I like when you say please." "That was good." or "Grandma really feels good when you say thanks for the gift he gave you. "
• Provide positive feedback when your child is using their manners.
It is natural that children need reminders to use custom. Dr. Benson says: "A discreet reminder signed is a good way to kick-start without really seems like a reminder was needed. Children can use their habits without seeming to have to constantly be asked. "
