Question about Disney Costumed Character Job?
I am hoping to get a response by someone who has worked, know one who does work, or someone who used to work at Disney in Orlando, FL as a Costumed Character. Coming up next month they are having open Auditions for such positions and i was wondering, besides what the website tells you in the information of the job, what should i keep in mind? I’m about 6’1, 210lbs and i’m just wondering how the audition process is handled and what to keep in mind when going in for it. Thank you
My knowledge is about Disneyland in California, but it is pretty much the same, I just think they’re a bit more lenient in Florida. It is also about face character auditions. Atmosphere characters (Mickey, Minnie, Pooh, ect.) are pretty much the same except for the character look a like part.
Audition process:
1. You line up in a HUGE line just to get your number. Anywhere from 200-700 people will be there! Be prepared to wait a long time!
2. They will measure you. Height is an extremely important factor in which Disney character you could play.
3. They will take you into the room, 10 at a time and just look at you. They are trying to picture you as different characters and determine if you have the ‘Disney look’. They may ask you questions about your acting experience, working w/ kids, ect. They will cut about half of the entire group here. (i think this is face character only)
4. (Any of these can happen in any order. They change the order every time)
a. Story telling (for atmosphere, without words)
they will assign you a story to tell, sometimes as a certain character, and you have to tell it as animated and best as you can.
b. Dance routine. Very simple. Across the floor, spins, arm movements, ect. This is to show (especially for those being considered for princesses) how graceful you are. They don’t want you tripping in front of 20 kids and there parents!
c. Wigging. (face characters only) This is exactly what it sounds like. They put you in the wig for the character(s) they are picturing you as. If they really like you, they will put you in full costume. Many times, this comes before story telling, and you stay in costume while you tell the story as the character you are dressed in.
5. Interview. This is a very difficult process, and not many people even make it halfway through the audition, so you are very lucky to make it to the interview. This is basically when they diecide if you make it or not.
If you make it all the way through the audition and are hired, you will go through a week long training process, in which you will learn to sign you assigned character(s) names PERFECTLY, watch their movies over and over, learn the ‘distress signal’ for security, proper Disney ettiquite, ect.
After that you’re off to the park!
TIPS:
SMILE! It is VERY important!
Do NOT come dressed as a character, they will cut you immediately.
Be as animated as possible, don’t be afraid to look ridiculous.
If you don’t make it the first time, TRY AGAIN! And again and again if you have to! Disney really values persistance and dedication!
I hope I could help! Good luck! I hope you do great!
Rememberm Disney is about making dreams come true
